  4.               SOFTWARE MAKES A COMPUTER TICK - ONE BYTE AT A TIME 
  5.

  8.        With so much software in the marketplace sometimes the hardest 
  9.        job is to select from overabundance and arrive at genuinely 
  10.        useful programs. Software is available in three basic flavors: 
  11.        COMMERCIAL, PUBLIC DOMAIN and SHAREWARE. 
  12.  
  13.        Commercial software is sold by mail or through retail outlets 
  14.        and is generally protected by both legitimate and stringent 
  15.        copyright laws. Commercial software may in addition be copy-
  16.        protected (difficult or impossible to make spare disk copies) or 
  17.        non-copy protected (can be copied to another disk for safe-
  18.        keeping or archival purposes.) Commercial software is usually of 
  19.        good quality and can range in price from 10 dollars to several 
  20.        hundred dollars or more. 
  21.  
  22.        For the first time computer user, an outstanding commercial 
  23.        package which includes a robust word processor, excellent 
  24.        spreadsheet, database, modem package, macros, tutorials, spell 
  25.        checker, macros, thesaurus and other features is Microsoft 
  26.        Works. Retailing for about $100, it represents value for a 
  27.        beginner and may be the only package needed for a home office, 
  28.        small business or hobbyist.

  30.        Public domain software represents computer programs which have 
  31.        been released into the public domain, do not require payment or 
  32.        registration fees to the author, and are frequently available 
  33.        from computer clubs, some libraries, and modem BBS telephone 
  34.        systems. PC Magazine utilities are examples of public domain 
  35.        software. 
  36.  
  37.        Shareware, a third area of software interest represents programs 
  38.        whose author(s) request a donation or registration but are 
  39.        otherwise available in much the same manner as public domain 
  40.        software. Frequently "enticements" such as a documentation 
  41.        manual of program instructions, an upgrade disk or other bonus 
  42.        offer is made within the program to secure a registration fee. 
  43.        An example of shareware is this software program, PC-LEARN. 
  44.  
  45.        Which type of software is best? Probably a little of each, to be 
  46.        honest. Many people find that starting with several affordable 
  47.        commercial programs (to ensure fast, productive results) and 
  48.        then sampling shareware over time (to continue trying new 
  49.        software) to be of value. Other computer owners find that 
  50.        starting with shareware and public domain software (to get a 
  51.        broad sampling of software variety at little cost) and then 
  52.        buying additional commercial programs as sophisticated needs 
  53.        grow also to be useful.

  57.                        UTILITIES ADD POWER TO COMPUTING

  61.        We have discussed larger application software packages such as 
  62.        spreadsheets, word processing packages and databases elsewhere 
  63.        within PC-LEARN, but UTILITY software packages are an area of 
  64.        software productivity which every beginner should investigate. 
  65.        What are utilities? Software programs which augment computing 
  66.        capabilities, manage files, backup data, provide calculators, 
  67.        recover files from disaster, transfer files between computers 
  68.        and thousands of other "small essential jobs." A few of the top 
  69.        utility packages include the following.

  71.        PC TOOLS DELUXE. The quintessential toolkit of goodies DOS 
  72.        forgot to include. PC Tools contains a superb DOS shell for file 
  73.        management, a miniature database, file transfer utility, 
  74.        calculator, backup system, unerase data restorer, disk repair 
  75.        capability, security file wiper and literally dozens of other 
  76.        useful one-of-a-kind goodies. If you can only afford one 
  77.        utility, PC Tools Deluxe is it. 
  78.  
  79.        THE PC MAGAZINE UTILITIES are continuing classics and favorites 
  80.        of many users. Available through most computer clubs and by 
  81.        modem from local BBS sources and PC Magazine as disk bonus 
  82.        offers when you subscribe to that periodical. An index to PC 
  83.        Magazine utilities is maintained through their on line PcMagnet 
  84.        modem service which can be reached by following printed 
  85.        instructions contained in every issue of PC Magazine. The 
  86.        utilities are in the public domain and generally available at no 
  87.        charge beyond a small disk copying or distribution fee. 
  88.        Most shareware distributors carry disk sets of the PC Magazine
  89.        utilities.

  91.        LABELPRO prepares labels and address stickers better than any 
  92.        competing program. Prepare nametags, casette tape labels, 
  93.        address stickers with ease.

  95.        HOTLINE allows you to manage, search, sort and DIAL phone 
  96.        directory databases. A grownup electronic rolodex system which 
  97.        works better than any other program of this type.

  99.        BROOKLYN BRIDGE & DESKLINK allow transfer of files between 
  100.        computers via a cable connector and facilitate the transfer 
  101.        between desktop and laptop computers with ease. 
  102.  
  103.        KEYWORKS & NEWKEY are universal keyboard macro programs which 
  104.        issue a burst of keystrokes when you press only one or two keys. 
  105.        ESSENTIAL for all beginners to learn and use! NEWKEY is 
  106.        shareware.

  108.        CHECK-IT & SYSTEM SLEUTH perform diagnostic tests to tell your 
  109.        what connections, cables, ports disk drives and components are 
  110.        working and why. You can locate bad memory chips and in general 
  111.        save time and frustration tracking down problems.

  113.        QEMM-386 & 386MAX manage vast areas of RAM memory in 80386 
  114.        equipped computers. These can convert extended memory to 
  115.        expanded memory, move device drivers and terminate and stay 
  116.        resident programs efficiently, and remap BIOS and graphics video

  126.        disk files to floppy disks and tape backup systems. A variety of 
  127.        options allows selective backup by date, data and file type.

  129.        SUPER PC-KWIK provides a fast disk cache buffer system that 
  130.        speed processing and convenience for hard disk users. Speed is 
  131.        always a convenience when using a hard drive and SUPER PC-KWIK 
  132.        is the champion disk cache software utility.

  134.        PKZIP is a unique shareware program which compresses files up to 
  135.        80% smaller in size! This frees up disk space on your hard drive 
  136.        and also allows faster file transfers when using a modem. PKZIP

  161.        PRINTCACHE is a print spooler. You can thus dump your document 
  162.        file out to the printer and within a split second come back to 
  163.        your program and keep working rather than sit there for 30 
  164.        minutes as your printer hogs the PC.

  166.        ULTRAVISION adjusts cursor size and provides many differing 
  167.        typefaces on your screen if you don't care for the ones which 
  168.        came with your software or PC.

  170.        MAGELLAN The ultimate text search utility. Search an entire hard 
  171.        disk quickly for the file that contains the phrase "swimming 
  172.        pool budget for Mr. Davis" or other search idea. Great for 
  173.        locating that document when piles of files seem lost on your 
  174.        hard drive.

  176.        VGA DIMMER screen dimmer program to prevent phosphor burnout 
  177.        from leaving screen on and unattended for long periods of time.

  180.        GRANDVIEW The best of the outliner programs. When you need to 
  181.        assemble, sort and prioritze tasks or documents Grandview is it.

  183.        SOFTWARE BRIDGE & WORD FOR WORD PROFESSIONAL allow different 
  184.        word processing programs to swap documents in different file 
  185.        formats. Great for the office where each person uses a different 
  186.        word processing package.

  190.                         BACK TO SHAREWARE FOR A MOMENT

  194.        Let's look for a moment at the wellspring of shareware resources 
  195.        that run well beneath the surface of the conventional computer 
  196.        landscape. You do not have to be a hobbyist, hacker or computer 
  197.        guru to utilize shareware and public domain software. A short 
  198.        list of shareware distributors follows this section.

  200.        Membership in a local computer club or user group is one way 
  201.        to obtain shareware. Many retail software and computer 
  202.        equipment stores maintain lists of local clubs. 
  203.        
  204.        Frequently a local and friendly Radio Shack salesman can give 
  205.        you a clue as to computer clubs. The clubs frequently augment 
  206.        club treasuries by sale of shareware disks. Membership with many 
  207.        clubs is optional - purchasing a shareware disk is convenient 
  208.        whether you are a member or not. Disk distribution or copying 
  209.        may fees hover around $3 to $5.

  211.        A second, perhaps more convenient source for some people, is 
  212.        mail order sources of shareware, otherwise known as shareware 
  213.        distributors. A list of several shareware sources is provided 
  214.        at the end of this tutorial.

  216.        A third avenue for locating shareware is either a BBS computer 
  217.        system (a computer in someone's home or office hooked by modem 
  218.        to telephone lines) or the larger commercial on-line services 
  219.        such as Compuserve, The Source and BIX. These larger commercial 
  220.        services can be the fastest way to locate and obtain shareware. 
  221.        The on-line modem route has the additional advantage that 
  222.        shareware can be located by electronic search/sort which 
  223.        certainly speeds up the process. Cost is obviously a factor. 
  224.        With a local BBS service the cost is simply that of a local 
  225.        phone call. Commercial services generally charge by the minute 
  226.        or hour and sometimes also involve long distance charges if a 
  227.        local line is not available.

  229.        Next a list of popular mail order shareware distributors not to 
  230.        be confused with mail order software distributors of commercial 
  231.        software. Contact them and request a free catalog - you will 
  232.        be surprised at the depth and variety of shareware offerings.

  234.        As an example, this disk, PC-LEARN, is a shareware program 
  235.        carried by PC-SIG and many other shareware distributors. By 
  236.        the way, a shareware distributor usually charges a nominal fee 
  237.        ($2 to $5) to copy and DISTRIBUTE a disk to you. If you find the 
  238.        shareware useful, you are encouraged to send the author of the 
  239.        package a final REGISTRATION FEE ($10 to $50 approximately) to 
  240.        use the package and receive updated copies, instruction manuals 
  241.        or bonus items to thank you for the courtesy of registering. 
  242.        Shareware is an honor system. The distributors make money charging 
  243.        a fee for a sample disk, but the author also deserves a registration 
  244.        fee if you find the shareware useful.
